Accounting that helps you run the business.
High-level accounting and business advising for owners at any size, whether you're getting set up, scaling up, or getting ready to sell.
Mattson Industries helps business owners, landlords, families, and nonprofits get set up correctly, keep accurate books, find legal ways to pay less tax, and make big financial decisions with clear numbers. We do the detailed work and explain it in plain language.
We also coordinate with the outside CPA, attorney, investment advisor, insurance broker, and real estate agents who work alongside us. Every client needs something different, so the work is shaped around your company.
What we do for clients.
Books and financial oversight
Bookkeeping, payroll, cleanup, and oversight.
Monthly bookkeeping and reconciliations, QuickBooks cleanup when the books and the bank do not match, and books that agree with your tax return. If we keep your books, we can also run your payroll.
Review and training for your in-house bookkeeper, audit support, and clear financial reports, arranged around what your office needs.
Taxes and business structure
Tax planning and reviews, formations, contracts, and insurance, with the outside professionals named.
Retirement accounts for self-employment income, depreciation on equipment and vehicle purchases, how S corporation owners pay themselves, and Wisconsin rules that differ from federal ones.
We check your last several years of returns for errors and missed deductions, such as income reported twice or mortgage interest left off. Our outside CPA handles any corrections.
Prepared by our outside CPA.
We form LLCs, S corporations, and nonprofits in house.
Independent contractor agreements, liability releases, and other business contracts, drafted in house and finalized by a Wisconsin licensed attorney.
We help make sure you are insured correctly through our outside insurance broker. We also check coverage before any new company is formed.
Ownership and big decisions
Buying, selling, real estate, and investments.
We ask the seller for the right information and analyze it for you.
Financial packages for buyers, help answering their questions, private details held back until the right agreements are signed, and preparation for buyer meetings.
1031 exchanges, buying property through a trust, and LLCs for rentals you own with a partner. We also work with top-producing real estate agents in the area.
Handled by our outside investment advisor, the best in the area in our view.
Ongoing advising
A regular look at the numbers and what comes next.
A regular review of your numbers and next steps.
A plan in three stages.
Each stage is ranked, so the first item is the one that matters most.
Like opening a retirement account.
Like amending past tax returns.
Like restructuring how your properties or companies are owned.
- 01A relationship, not a file.
In accounting, the long-term relationship matters even more than it does on the lot. We earn trust with consistent communication and follow-through, and we keep it with high-level work: business and tax advising for companies of any size, ready to scale up or sell.
- 02Plain language.
We explain the why before we ask for anything. We start with a few key questions instead of a long list of document requests.
- 03Checked to the source.
Every number we hand you ties back to your bank statements, tax returns, and records.
- 04You decide.
We point out opportunities and give an honest opinion. We never push.
- 05Owners ourselves.
Besides this practice, we own and run businesses in software, construction, and vehicle and RV sales, including a licensed Wisconsin dealership. We face the same payroll, inventory, and tax questions our clients do.
- 06No surprise bills.
Every client needs something different, so fees are set for each client based on the company and the work involved.
Ian Mattson leads the accounting and advisory work.
He previously served as accounting controller for a real estate firm with five offices. Today he is Executive Director and Board President of a Western Wisconsin nonprofit with about 150 staff and, at the same time, accounting director for a second local nonprofit. He also advises a number of small business clients.
We are based in Bloomer, Wisconsin, and meet with clients in person across Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Altoona, and the rest of the Chippewa Valley. We also take on larger projects anywhere in Wisconsin.
